Boring and a bad premise. Discounts the roles of trappers and Indians, emphasizes an idea the writer has of some kind of a ‘factory system’ (his words) that had monolithic control of activities In the Wild West. Reads like a Ph.D thesis based wholly in the mind of single, dull student.
I read both volumn 1 and 2 both were very comprehensive full of information and history.They are not novels and don't look for a story line. Its more like reading a text book but I found it hard to put down at times. I was looking for specific ties to my family members in history and was thrilled when the family was mentioned several times.There may be a volumn 3 not sure.
This is a good book with some great information but it tends to be a little draggy at times. Maybe a little too much detail, but the facts are correct.
Extremely well written and researched. My only complaint is that the book cut off (ended) in mid sentence and does not include the appendix, which is extremely informative, which is found in the hard cover.

A great insightful history written from many original sources of information. Both broad and indepth. Good read.
