When I was in the 4th grade in NYC, the teacher gave us an assignment to do a report on some aspect of life in NY. The finished reports were going to be read to the class. My particular assignment was the sports of NY. I got lazy and ended up making a report on the sports stadiums of NY, not the sports themselves, as the research was easier. I knew I was wrong and I also knew that I'd taken an easier road. I got lucky and the teacher never called on me but I knew what a poor job I'd done and it stayed with me. That's what reading this book made me think of.The sub title is "From rise, to reign, to ruin", so as a lover of ancient civilizations I was looking forward to reading all about their history, the building of their fantastic road system and of course, the amazing structures they built, including the mind boggling Machu Picchu. Unfortunately, what we get is the briefest of overviews on the ancient Inca and their accomplishments and supposedly verbatim conversations of their ruin by Pizzaro, which takes up most of the book. You can get the contents of this book basically for free on Wikipedia. It should have been sub titled "From the briefest of overviews of their past and their ruin by Pizzaro".The author's writing style is clear and easy to read but he got lazy on the harder-to-research ancient Inca, so overall I was disappointed and I cannot recommend this book.
A good read. While Inca's get all the attention, this book makes it clear that there were a lot of indigenous tribes prior to their arrival on the scene. Apparently, Inca history is pretty well documented by the Spanish and others. The amount of gold and silver taken by the Spanish is overwhelming (90 pounds of gold and 180 pounds of silver to each cavalryman!) and the Spanish cruelty towards the indigenous peoples and the Spanish practice of melting all the finery down into ingots is heart breaking.
Another great e-book by the very knowlegeable Brien Foerster. Every book he writes is well written and well researched. The price is right and the book is easy to read. Not the same old information you may have already heard (most of that info is wrong). Buy it and read it immediately. One of the most authoritative authors on Peru, the Incas and those peoples that preceeded the Incas.
XLNT book, well written and balanced retelling of Spain's shame and the awesome Inca civilization they destroyed. Will surely make you ashamed of being a white person of European descent.
Excellent account of the history of Peruvian architecture.
Nice piece of work telling a story in greater detail than that which wee commonly learn. All the makings of a great action adventure story with the ability to then go and experience the geography for ones self.

A good place to start your dive into the Inca era... A good high lever survey that is readable and brief... But to be augmented with deeper inquiry and research... Very knowledgeable author but behind on some of the recent discoveries I learned after doing my own research and inquiry aftrwards... Perfect for the traveler to Peru but be careful about arguing based on this book in front of people that really know the topic...
