I will give any book three stars simply because the act of writing a book, finishing it, and having ti published is a tremendous accomplishment. That said, this story could have been called The Devil Wears Nikes. Every character in it has an interchangeable character featured in Devil Wears Prada: Andie/Charlie, Miranda/Todd, Emily/Natalya, Nigel/Jake, Christian/Marco. One again we have a sheltered, naive, whiny young girl who becomes involved with an infamously difficult but renowned coach/mentor/boss type and turns into something she originally despised only to realize she never wanted the fame, success, and money anyway. Because, sure.***SPOILERS***The story itself is dry and bland and moves at a snail's pace. It's unclear what is at stake or why readers should care if the protagonist achieves her goal because she doesn't seem all that driven by it. Several scenes could have been cut or felt out of place (like the cruise aboard Bono's yacht). The fauxmance was forced and unbelievable. It made absolutely no sense that Marco would ask her to escort him to some players party, seeing as he's portrayed as a player/lothario type. They hook up maybe three times in a year and suddenly he's calling her his girlfriend. Again, totally untrue to the character. Their relationship is all over the place and he goes from being super into Charlie to a total douche literally overnight. The nemesis is predictable - hot and bitchy but never gets hers in the end, which was unsatisfying. Many of the scenes didn't push the story along, and I wanted to scream at the upteenth time Weisberger stops a scene to go back in time, making an already too long story longer. By the time I got to the third act I was skimming. The ending was predictable and forced, again creating a relationship where there really wasn't one because all happy endings must include a man. This is the third novel by Weisberger and I think I'm done. There's no real plot, the characters are hollow and one dimensional, and the protagonists are unlikeable.
Not every book can be "Prada." I was hoping for a great beach read, but at times I drifted off to sleep while reading this. It's not just that I don't care for tennis; the writing was dry and boring. I HATE when phrases are repeated and this is full of throat clearings and coughs by nearly all the characters. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this book.
I LOVE this author but was disappointed in this recent novel. It seemed like she was taking her own personal love of tennis and creating a character (or maybe based on someone she knows and/or has talked to?) that fit a predictable story line. I enjoyed certain aspects of the plot and it kept my attention as an easy, light, summer read, but it was not one I would pass along to friends after I was done reading.
This was not a very exciting book but it was interesting as far as learning about the tennis circuit. The storyline itself was kind of boring because the characters were boring and one-dimensional. I couldn't wait to finish the book. The writing itself was not that smooth and maybe a better editor could've done more. I also felt there was a lot of repetition in order to make the book seem longer. It was not worth the $14 that I paid for my Kindle copy.
Not every Weisberger book can be as amazing as "The Devil Wears Prada." I feel like Weisberer did so much research on tennis that she forgot to develop Charlie's personality. As always, I will continue to buy and read any book Weisberger writes. However, I don't anticipate that "The Singles Game" will get as worn out as my copies of Prada and "Everyone Worth Knowing."
I like Lauren Weisberger....I enjoy escaping into her books and usually find interesting characters and great humor dotting the punctuating the story line. Unfortunately, this is one book that reads like it was written by someone else. It seemed a very predictable plot peppered with one dimensional characters who were difficult to care about. There was decent information about the professional tennis circuit, but mostly info that is easily obtainable with a little Google searching if truly interested in the topic. A huge disappointment...and very disappointed with myself for having stayed with it to the end...definitely not worth the time it took to download it on my Kindle.
I love all of Lauren Weisberger's books. I love her writing! Was beyond excited when I saw she was coming out with this one. I couldn't wait to read it. I hate to say. It's not as good as the others, In my opinion. If you are a fan of Weisberger's writing still read it. It's worth reading. It just felt kinda rushed in spots.
As a busy mom of 4 young kids (one of which is a newborn) I don't have a lot of time to read. I downloaded the singles game on my phone and it was the perfect escape while the kids were playing it I was nursing. Easy story to follow so i could multi task and just pick up when I had a few minutes. The problem was I never wanted to put it down! I kept craving more juicy details of Charlie's life.
