“Maurice” by E. M. Forster is an English language literary masterpiece classic, written in 1913-14, revised in 1932 and revised again in 1959-60, but not published until 1971 after Forster’s death. One movie, following closely the story line of the book, was produced in 1987, with notable super-stars featured, including a young Hugh Grant. Though good and beautifully filmed, the movie is far less impactful than the book. The title of this review (“You can do anything once you know what it is”) is taken directly from the text at about 90%, with Maurice stating that philosophical gem to Scudder. There are 3 primary characters: Maurice, Clive, and Alec (Scudder), all beautiful, youthful, intelligent Brits. It is a story of secret gay love in the early 20th Century, just before the onset of World War I and takes place in England, still largely Victorian in its thinking and mores. What is particularly interesting is the sociological-historical-legal-psychological context in which this story of same sex coupling takes place. The book abounds with harsh criticism of British (indeed, world) attitudes, laws, and views of homosexuality, as it was considered then (as it still is now in many places in the world) a criminal act and or a psychological deficiency, even a mental illness; in short homosexuality was something despicable and in need of erasure. Christianity and the ruling intelligentsia take a big hit from Forster. Thus, his book takes a more direct approach to the topic of gay love than, say, Mary Renault does in her exceptionally good books of same-sex love in ancient times (such as the times of Alexander the Great), including “The Persian Boy” published in 1972.All characters are perfectly captured as representatives of class society in Britain, which in the early 1900s still dominated everyday life, but it was also obvious that class society was crumbling and on its way out, due primarily to its inherent ridiculousness and the rise of a more educated middle class. Nonetheless, Maurice’s eventual final choice of partner may even be more shocking to fellow characters in the story and to readers alike who have an eye to the past, insofar as Alec (Scudder) is “low-born”.It has a slight “Days of Our Lives” feel to it (in the soap opera sense), but that aspect does not detract or subtract from the power and beauty (or message) of the story. It’s a classic novel of course, a wonderful read, and now in 2016, some 100 years later, serves well as an historical reminder of the bad old days.A 5+ of course.

The book kept my attention from page one to the end. Forster had great insight into human nature and gave the characters believable personalities that made me want to continue reading about them. Homosexuality was taboo in his day, and sadly we have not come so far that it is no longer a state that people struggle with and fear being rejected for. Self-loathing and suicidal thoughts plagued Forster’s main character...100 years later, young men and women still harbour these feelings for the very same reasons.Spoiler Alert...Maurice ended up choosing Hope over Defeat, and that is a relevant message worth reading today.

I HAVE LOVED THIS BOOK FOR 27 YEARS. I WAS A VERY YOUNG MAN AND RATHER CONVENTIONAL WHEN I STUMBLED ACROSS THIS REMARKABLE GEM. THIS BOOKED SAVED ME, IT BECAME MY LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS. IT GAVE ME HOPE, I WAS SO MOVED BY THE STORY. IN 1988 I HAD KNOW IDEA THAT EDWARDIAN COULD TEACH ME ANYTHING, I WAS HAPPILY PROVED WRONG.

I was exposed to E. M. Forster in college and I enjoyed reading him and loved his characterizations and motivations. I didn't know at first that Forster was gay in a time when that was very problematic. Forster penned Maurice but could never publish it in his lifetime. After his death it came to light at a moment when momentum was beginning for gay rights. It defies the restrictive convention that 'gay' stories had to end in misery. Maurice has a happy ending, making Forster's point that happiness in love is attainable in any way. As usual, the story is peppered with Forster's cogent observations on class and the often silly conventions of society. It is rooted in a specific place and time so some readers may find it's descriptions somewhat dated but I think there is enough universality there to address questions we still ask.

Maurice is not an easy book to read... literally. The (beautiful) Edwardian language and dialogue posed some challenges for me. However, it gets easier as the story moves along and the final reward makes it well worth the small effort. Forster's outsider view in life leads to great insight of the three main characters of the novel. He takes a no holds barred approach in telling the story of homosexual love and class divisions in early 20th century England. While the intimate scenes in the book are only alluded to with words like "sharing"... the feelings are clear and have more impact owing to the lack of physical detail. This book is an important work in lgbt literature because it presents a happy (if implausible) ending for the protagonists at a time when homosexual acts were criminal. Forster dedicated this book "To A Happier Year"... and in writing Maurice he hastened its arrival.

Actually, I bought the book as a gift for a young writer who knew of Forster's "A Passage to India" --but not the excellent film version--but not this work that the author prevented from being published until after his death. He was quite closeted during his lifetime. It's a beautiful love story of two Oxford students who fall in love but are mindful of the societal (and British law) condemnation of homosexuality. It is not graphic nor did it need to be; neither was the somewhat recent film version with a young Hugh Grant as one of our protagonists. But it was charming what with its treatment of the privileged classes and the adoration of the other protagonist by a gameskeeper on the other chap's estate. When the class distinction melts away because mutual love and respect, we find Forster at his finest, that for him, love does conquer all. It certainly resonates with today's social mobility of the LGBT community whose championing of Constitutional guarantees of equal protection are bringing down state laws banning same-sex marriage. Forster would be proud.
