About the Author
Benjamin Lai, born in Hong Kong and educated in the UK, is one of the few ethnic Chinese to have served as an officer in the British Army. His previous books include several for Osprey. Author Benjamin Lai continues his very readable work on the military histories of China and Japan in the Far East. This new Osprey Duel Series book focuses on the Battle of the Yalu River in 1894. However, the real story may lie in how two major Asian naval powers traveled their separate paths to the confrontation in the Yellow Sea.Contacts, in many cases coercive, with Western Navies in the 19th Century prompted a naval arms race between China and Japan. China got a head start, but as the author describes, was often hamstrung by its own internal politics. The late-starting Japanese made up ground quickly through hard effort and good choices in leadership and training. The author sets the stage for the battle of the Yalu River through an extensive discussion of the two combatants and their ships, arms, training and leadership.The heart of the narrative is of course the battle itself, carefully described in the text, backed by battle diagrams and period illustrations and photographs. The concluding analysis is rather startling and very worthwhile. Highly recommended as a concise and informative introduction to the topic.
