This book is a well-placed interlude from the five intense stories preceding it. There's plenty of comedy here. We get much more of the kindhearted, good humored side of Walt Longmire as he deals with the aches and pains of the inevitable injuries from previous stories, the problems large and small of his staff, his daughter's impending wedding, and a colorful trailer-trash family running the local junk yard. The underpinning of this book is the partnership between Longmire and Vic. While acknowledging what has transpired in the earlier books, this story looks at the working relationship between the sheriff and his ferocious, foul-mouthed, wickedly funny deputy. She might give him endless s**t, but she always has his back when things get rough. Even Henry takes a back seat to Vic in this one.Don't worry. There's still a murder or three to be solved, Walt still has to take some cringe-worthy licks like he always does, and there's still an action-packed ending. But he isn't as personally invested in the case this time. The injuries he sustains this time are more comical than life-threatening -- he immediately forgives the girl who sends him howling onto the night with a blast of bear spray to his face and the dog that bites him in the ass -- and the only person laughing harder at his misfortune than us is Deputy Vic.The Walt Longmire in this story is an approachable, nice guy who is quick to laugh at himself and the situations he finds himself in, and who cares about his county and the people in it. A light refreshment for Longmire fans.

My favorite Walt Longmire quote or conversation in Junkyard Dogs is between his Doctor and himself.“What’s up, Doc?” ... “How’s the knee?” I winced. “All right, till you started monkeying around with it.” He looked up at me, all the world the likeness of some venerated Caesar and just as forgiving. “The shotgun wound to your leg has healed moderately well?” “Yep.” “No lingering symptoms from pneumonia from drowning?” “I didn’t really drown.” His voice was sharp. “When you have to be resuscitated, you drowned.” “Okay.” “Take off your coat.” I did, and he took my left hand and examined the scar tissue. He held my upper arm and turned my forearm, rotating the elbow. “Does this hurt?” I lied. “No.” He unsnapped my cuff, raised the sleeve of my shirt, and looked more closely at the elbow itself. “You have some swelling here, under the scar tissue.” I lied again. I didn’t usually lie, but with the Doc it had become a habit. “I’ve always had that.” He shook his head and manipulated my shoulder. It sounded gravelly like Geo Stewart’s. “The shoulder?” “It feels great.” “It doesn’t feel great to me, and it doesn’t sound so good either.” He frowned as he compressed the joint and lifted my arm. “How’s that?” It actually hurt like hell, so I pulled my arm loose. “Not so great, which is why I’ve dropped mandatory departmental saluting.” “How is your foot?” “Fabulous.” He studied me with a look, and the only description that might apply would be askance. “You’re still limping.” “I’ve come to consider it a character trait.” “Take off your hat.” “I don’t think that’s going to help with the limp.” Walt LongmireWhat a great scene and Junkyard Dogs is a very entertaining mystery. Look out for Butch and Sundance! ! I truly enjoy Craig Johnson's Longmire Series. This is my 6th Longmire Book. I am looking forward to the next book!!!

Once again a great read. You get wrapped up in the characters of the story, feeling like you really know each one. You almost can feel that cold Wyoming wind blowing down your neck as you fight your way across open range land with two feet of snow on the ground. As Craig Johnson describes each wound and blow you feel yourself touching the same places on yourself as you grimace with the pain, but you also thrill in Sheriff Longmire’s successes. You even get the feeling you know each of his friends and family. It is very hard to put these books down and not read them cover to cover in one sitting. The various cases and people at play during this story will keep you guessing until the final page. Then it’s off to buy the next book in the series.

Murders and other evil deeds abound in this sixth novel of the Sheriff Walt Longmire series. It made me wonder if there are any peaceful folks living in Wyoming’s sparsely populated Absaroka County. Walt and his deputies are actively pursuing all leads to achieve justice and even Walt’s dog, named Dog, gets into the act. The dialogue in this book seems particularly excellent and it serves to give the reader a much better appreciation of the speaker’s character. For example, Henry Standing Bear, sometimes called The Cheyenne Nation by Walt, never uses a contraction when speaking. He will always reply, “That is true,” instead of “That’s true.” The plot is complicated as usual and much of the action takes place outdoors in severely cold weather and deep snowfalls. Basque deputy Santiago Saizorbitoria has been affected by the violence and considers quitting to find a more peaceful occupation but Walt and deputies Moretti and Ferguson help carry the workload. Author Craig Johnson gives you plenty of suspects to consider but the guilty party seems to always be the one whom you least suspect.

I read the first five books in the series and really enjoyed them. But this book was terrible, containing endless pages of descriptions of places that didn’t mean anything to the story. Way too many characters keep track ofI could not wait for this book to end. I probably will not purchase any further in the series. It was like the author changed writing styles.I am done with Craig Johnson books!
