If you're beginning to discover B.B. King's music or are new to Eric Clapton's career, this may be the album to start learning where Clapton's influences came from. Here, he teams with the blues legend on a new song, the title track, and several re-workings of his songs. I like "Riding with the King," "Ten Long Years," "Key to the Highway," "Three O'clock Blues," "Help the Poor," "I Wanna Be," the rollicking "Days of Old," and "When My Heart Beats like a Hammer." Bub truthfully, there is no bad song here.
Like many others, I was skeptical when this was first released. B.B. is the undisputed King of the Blues, and I wondered how well he and Eric Clapton would mesh. But then, I heard "Come Rain or Come Shine" on the radio, and I was hooked (some times, I think it is impossible for someone to do a bad job with this song). The title, "Riding With the King" kinda lets us know who is the Boss here. Clapton and B.B. both did themselves proud with this album, though. There is more than enough to make this a worthwhile purchase. The instrumental work between them is the best, and their two distinctive styles mesh well together. However, Slow Hands cannot hang when it comes to the vocal aspect of the Blues, and is a tad short in some blues classics. They positively burn down the house with their rendition of the Isaac Hayes/David Porter classic "Hold On, I'm Coming". That alone makes this worth the price of a ticket to ride. This is a fine fine disc.
Not completely a crossover album, since Clapton is almost as closely associated with the blues as is King. But the age difference, difference in era, styles and voice types makes this a unique project. Most interestingly is the heavy, "opinionated" musical styles of both artists. At times, there is an ungraceful colliding of voices as beef smacks up against beef. But instead of being uncomfortable and strange, it's like a couple of blues masters jamming together. It's the guitarists who will likely find this album most interesting. The combination of steel & acoustic styles and sounds blend into a sweet sound, requiring only a snare drum and organ (Key to the Highway) to make it the perfect accompaniment to the soulful voices. It's almost like master and star student are performing together. They seem to work together as one, yet each incorporating their distinct ideas into the album.
This is something that every blues fan in the world wanted to see. I am not talking abaut this CD only but about the whole Clapton-King concept. Here are two of the most influencial musicians in the guitar world united to show the world the power of the blues. The idea of covering Classic King tunes just makes this CD more appealing to the buyer. The Song selecction makes every effort to place each guitarrist in a "conversational" playing mood with each other and, somehow, it is intended to show respect to B.B. King as one of America's master of the blues. As for Clapton, he is probably, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan, the most influencial modern blues player. Not only his work is inspired in the blues but he has transmitted this energy to rock in his many groups and solo projects.Key to note that this is not the first time that Clapton and King have worked together. Clapton colaborated to King's Dueces Wild CD and they both played on the Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute. This prior interaction makes their playing relationship more solid and the result is stamped on this colecction of tunes. As I mentioned, this record is a must for any blues lover...
B.B.King has never been better, and Eric is still God. You hope for a few good ones on an album - and this one delivers 7 really great cuts you will play over and over, with the other 5 better than most! The groove really cooks from the get-go on Riding With The King, and these men know how to build solos. They are gifted in their ability to create the tension that brings me back to The Blues time and again. After all, it's what you don't play that matters. I've written, performed, recorded and produced several albums myself and Less really is More - playing those rests is key. Some cuts are downright funky - it's great to hear that Hammond organ - and some are just plain legendary like Three O'Clock Blues. Of particular interest was the slower than usual Hold On I'm Coming. IF YOU LOVE THE BLUES, YOU GOTTA BUY THIS ONE - IT'S A KEEPER!! I PREDICT IT WILL BECOME A CLASSIC!
This was a gift for my son at Christmas. He was thrilled to receive it. Lots of good music.
I was leary about ordering it because I am not a jazz fan, however, the site provided a list of the music on the CD and a preview of the music so I was confident in purchasing. Please do not terminate the music previews. I have used this feature very often. Many thanks.
Although I've listened to this album at least two dozen times, I still cannot believe how terrific these two great musicians sound together. Eric and B.B. are on top of their genre all by themselves. Do we start a brand new genre, now, with Eric Clapton and BB. King as charter members? After all, when they're ridin' together theirs is a brand new sound. After I've listened to this another two dozen times, maybe it'll have sunk in that I'm not imagining.
