This will be the fourth copy of this book I have owned since I started on my path 40 years ago. Other copies were leant out-never to be returned, lost in moves, etc. All I can say about it is the damn thing just works. I have used both the Pagan and Christian versions of the spells and they both always seem to produce the desired results. Being a witch I tend to usually go for the old ways version, but depending on the situation and the spells' words or "lyrics"; have used the Christian ritual with very good results. You MUST work these spells. Meaning you have to invest some time in them in order for them to work. Most are not quick, impromptu, fly-by-night one time wonders. They are fairly involved and require days sometimes weeks to come to fruition. But good things come to he who waits. There are no ritualistic tools like the Athame, pentacle, specific botanicals etc. used in the workings. They usually require no more than colored candles, incense, candlesticks, a copy of this book and the WILL to make things work. If you are new to spellcraft, I cannot think of a better primer than this to start you on your way. Highly recommended. Good job!
I like this book, but there are a few caveats. First, the item description says that it includes 37 rituals adapted for Christians and Pagans; I count only 28 listed in the table of contents. Secondly, the way the book is structured, the first half of the book contains the Pagan spells/rituals. The second half of the book only duplicates the first half of the book, but rewords the rituals to present them from a Christian perspective. So no matter what your faith, most (though admittedly not ALL) people will find at least half of this book utterly useless to them.That said, the rituals that are presented (all 28 of them) are laid out in a very simple, easy-to-understand format. With one exception (which I will address in a moment), the intent of the ritual is clearly laid out. The "Bad Habit" ritual, for example, lists it's purpose as "To Overcome a Bad Habit", while the "Health" ritual says that it is "To Regain (or Retain) Good Health". All well and good. But then there is a ritual entitled "Death", which describes it's purpose as "For the Dead". What does this mean? Is it really for the dead? Or is it actually for the *living*, for the purpose of honoring the passing of someone close to you? It's purpose is murky at best.Overall, it's a good introduction to the topic of candle magic or candle ritual, but I would probably not have paid full price for it if I had had the chance to flip through it in person before buying. My advice would be to find a used copy if you can.
Buckland writes the best candle magic books hands down always has. My friend is a brilliant psychic medium (the only one I know that is not full of crap personally, Kat Burson) and she loves his Tarot book. I can’t speak to that, but I have used his candle magic(k) books my entire adult life (decades) and I think they are the best overall.Now, I was the kid in the library reading the library as a child...so I’ve always been a bit odd. You want degrees I have degrees, and I’ve studied every kind of mythology for kicks...some I’ve incorporated into my graduate studies...That being said...I’ve read tons candle magic books...His are not the easiest to read. But the structure is there and how and what to do with the candles and the intent. Where to put them and why. He also given you tons of this is how to set this up and we’re going to do this over a week and move this from here to here.And he give you a laundry list of spells, which most people like.So, I’ll slap this review on both of his books.Practical and advanced:)I like this best to start, it gives you everything you need to do candle magic, and you don’t have to cast a circle like you would in spell work. So, gotta love it.
The FIRST thing I love about this book is the way it's kinda 2-part. It has candle burning rituals as in "Old Religion", with a variety of rituals. Then, there's the "Christian Rituals" ... these are the exact same rituals as in the "Old Religion"... the difference is the "prayer" you can read while performing your ritual. The "Christian" uses Psalms or text from the bible. These "prayers" are there only in case you don't really know what you want to say while performing your ritual. The SECOND thing I love about this book is that under every single ritual there is this little "display" that shoes what your altar or place of ritual should look like, this includes all the candles that you need in the spots where they should be! And THIRD of all.... it is so easy to understand while you're reading, this is truly practical for a person like me who has never done anything like this and kinda needs a 101 class! I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking into burning candles for the first time.
I bought this to add to my collection and find it to be a little vague compared to DJ Conway's Little Book of Candle Magic. Overall it's a decent book, but not my favorite. I've browsed through it twice and nothing really stands out about it.
I gave this book a 5 star because it works! It is a beginners book so it gives step by step instructions on how and when to do the few spells. I wish it included more spells but the ones that it has are easily adaptable to create new ones. I love this book and his "Advanced Candle Magic" book. The second book teaches you how to adapt the spells to make new spells. Its wonderful! Love it. I love that he includes actual spells, a lot of other books say they include spells but they do not give the words to use; which can make all the difference. The two books are a must for your library. I wish he had more books like these two. Some of the spells included are: To Conquer Fear, To Stop Slander, To Gain Prosperity, To Soothe and Quiet Nerves, To Obtain Money, To Change One's Luck.
