I live in the very heart of the old Comancheria. In fact one of the Major Battles between the Comanches, and the US Calvary took place just miles from where I am typing this. The oldest Park in my Town is named after Randal Mackenzie. I've often wondered what this area looked like when it was the hunting grounds of the Comanches. What it must have been like to have been an early Settler here, and back towards the Hill Country of Texas. It is said that most Native Texans claim to be related to Quanah Parker, and therefore have some Comanche in them to some extent. I remember my Grand Mother telling me when I was a kid we had more than one Indian Tribe in our bloodline. I don't remember her mentioning the Comanche though. Anyway...I first read Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne. An EXCELLENT book too. That led me to wanting to learn more about the people kidnapped by the Indians in Texas, so I read The Captured. I thoroughly enjoyed both and would recommend them to anyone interested. Both books are full of terrifying stories of life on the Texas Frontier in the 1800's, as well of fasinating dipictions of the Plains Indian Horse culture that roamed the Plains back then.
This fascinating chapter from Texas history tells the story of children who were captured by Comanche and Apache Indians in the years mainly following the Civil War. The book often reads like a memoir but is actually an extremely well-researched history of the captives. Most of these children witnessed the brutal killing of other, older whites (in some cases their own mothers, who were sometimes raped and tortured before their deaths), yet went on to feel like family members to their captors. Many did not wish to return to their white families when saved and had a hard time adjusting back into the rigid ways of the whites. This book is a superb history of their travails, but also a great read. I highly recommend it.
An interesting account of children captured by Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche raiders as spoils of war when the children are ages 8-12 in the Texas hill country in the 1860s to 1870s. The author discusses approximately 8 cases where there are historical records suggesting that despite the brutal horror of family members murdered during the children's abductions, the children frequently grew to love and respect their captors and the less restrictive, exciting lifestyle practised by the Plains Indians during this timeframe, which was ending as Indians were forced onto reservations. The children, according to the author, frequently came from circumstances where poverty and custom dictated that children and women were isolated, and unprotected, herding animals, or tending to farm chores, making tempting targets for Indian raiders who sought both livestock and captives. The children quickly became valued members of the tribe, and were apparently given respect, power, resonsibility, and freedom in early adolescence, when they would have just been a farm drudge in the German American farming community (the author's, not my, point of view). The author describes the repatriated, often reluctantly, children's readjustment to their families; caught between two worlds, longing for the now prohibited "savage" way of life that reservations restricted.......or were the children's obvious adjustment difficulties caused by developmental, psychological trauma caused by witnessing and participating in violence? Perhaps war's brutality leaves psychological scars that mankind was still decades from understanding at that point in time? The author's ideas are interesting and he sheds light on a chapter in American history that I knew very little about.
Read "Crazy Horse" by Marshall, "Battle of Little Bighorn" by Philbrick and bumped into this one solely by accident-and loved it. Excellent read by an excellent writer. Dense material which author handles masterfully. Really gives the a reader some idea just how hardy these old settlers were-these people had an iron constitution that is barely recognizable today. Unexpected insight into "Stockholm Syndrome" and the rapid radicalization that can occur under "ideal" circumstances. Reminds me of a modern example, the 9/11 hijackers and their rapid radicalization as detailed in "The Perfect Soldiers"-also a great read.
It wasn't the most well written book I've ever read - it had issues for sure, but I found the story of the captives quite fascinating maybe because I was not born in the USA and didn't know that history. Beyond the story of the captives, I learnt so much about the Indians and Settlers and it has definitely made me want to read and understand more. Now when I read about Indian reservations or see the native Americans protesting the Dakota pipeline I feel so much empathy for them and what settlers did to their way of life and indeed their lives. I would recommend this book!
I really loved reading this book on the life of the author's family member. His description of the hard times for this German-American family reflects my grandfather's life as a new immigrant to this country. I can relate to the hard lives these children suffered and lack of affection. I commend the author for caring about his family to research these events and make it now part of his story. Makes me wonder how many children this happened to in Kansas and Oklahoma. Great book!
Great story and well written. I live/lived in the parts of Texas discussed, so that added to my interest. What I found most interesting, however, was the Native American's perspective on their raids & kidnapping settlers' children. In their view, they weren't stealing, merely replacing something they had lost. I teach American literature and would like to use exerpts with my students someday. Very enlightening.
Incredible history lesson. I had no idea of the kidnappings and torture that went on between these German immigrants and the Indians tribes (throughout Texas). Reading these pages made me sad for the children who were kidnapped. Their trauma led to acceptance only to have the trauma return when sent back to their families, they were caught between two worlds.
