My only main criticism of this book is that Clive Everton does get a bit bogged down with what seems like a personal vendetta against Rex Williams and the WPBSA. Not that it isn't justified when you read about the mismanagement of the players themselves and what they had to put up with in the 'early' days of television and the 'closed shop' of the top ranking pros of the Joe Davis era. Thank goodness Barry Hearn came along is all I can say! However, later on, there are some great stories about the late, 'great' Alex Higgins and his entourage though - one of the main reasons I bought the book (hey, we all love a good scandal).Everton's use of language is quite above the normal vocabulary, (it might even be described as academic or 'flowery') so it might pay to have a dictionary handy whilst reading! (I have learnt quite a few new words from this book!) but I wouldn't describe it as tough going.I was hoping to hear a bit more about the game itself and the rows over the equipment (pocket sizes, cloths etc) which didn't seem to materialize, but I guess it holds it's own in the fact that there are a few accounts I was previously unaware of, having read quite a lot of other 'snooker books' of the non-instructional type. It's not the best book on snooker 'history' I've ever read, but by far it's not the worst either.
well pleased.
Written with all the eloquence and fervor of a of a golf commentator. This is a decent read if you are looking for an atlas of snooker facts (or enjoy reading a dictionary), but the feeling and flow is just not there. This seems like a recap of years of old sports page scores and commentary. Seems to be lacking true grit! Nice cover art though
