I generally love Julia Cook's books, so it was a no-brainer for me to buy this one. However, I do not ever use this book. As others have said, it puts the responsibility to SOLVE every problem onto the adults in Wilma Jean's life. Not only do I not want to give children the message that they need to be rescued by an adult, but not every worry is reasonable and needs solving. The world can be a scary and uncertain place and this is a fact that we each must come to terms with if we want to function within it. Sending the message that some outside force will swoop in to soothe every concern you have is simply not realistic and a very bad message for children with anxiety. That said, I DID like the concepts in the book, just not their execution. I feel strongly that a re-write that helps Wilma Jean recognize which worries are in her control (and address those) and then some tools to help her deal with the worries that are not rational and/or outside of her control would take this from a 2 star book to a 5 star book.
I purchased this book as a gag since mym mother's name is Wilma Jean and she too is a worry machine! I couldn't help by notice the striking resemblance either! When I received the book I laughed at how similar this character is to my mother but quickly realized the story is good and truly addresses the problem of anxiety to children while also offering strategies for parents to use to help lessen the severity of anxiety. I have read this book to my toddler a few times now. She likes the illustration! It was a great buy! I highly recommend!
I am a huge fan of Julia Cook’s books.. however, I agree with the other reviews about the ‘tools’ this one teaches the child. Rather than having them take a breath and calm down it makes it the adults job for the worry to be under control. That is not teaching them to control their anxiety, it makes it worse because again it’s out of their control. Also the copy I received is not in page order so I would have major problems reading this to my students even if I wanted to.
My daughter had to see a professional therapist for separation anxiety. She is 6 years old. Her therapist read her this book on her first session. I looked on Amazon and bought it after. My daughter loves this book and I think that it could help any child with any kind of separation anxiety. Her class has a "parent read to the class" every Friday. I read this to her class and I could tell they all loved it and were 100% interested. Great book.
I bought this hoping it would be about childhood anxieties. This is only for school related fears. The solutions are superficial and the fact that Wilma Jean gets better so quickly is not believable either.
I feel like this book starts off ok. I wish is gave more solutions for the child to solve her own problems (music, deep breathing ect.) . Also, I feel like we may have gotten a book missing the last page. It just ends with her going to school and writing her worries down on a card. Is this the ending? Are we to assume that she and the teacher worked through the worries with her again? I'd love to know if this is how the book really ends.
I have two anxious kids so I thought this book might be great. Unfortunately it only focuses on worries that can be controlled such as tests at school, and doesn't really give any ideas of how my kids can counter fears that aren't easily fixed (such as fear of death, storms etc.). It also talks about how the teacher helps the anxious child, which is great, unless the teacher can't do that (due to lack of time of for whatever other reason).
Great kids book, but wish the parts of the book that rhymed had some better follow thru (a few sentences rhyme then a non-rhyme sentence, then back to a rhyming sentence in the same paragraph... not that I expect the book to rhyme).I like how it has a good overview of kids anxiety & how it can be dealt with.
