On March 17, young Jamie wakes up and realizes it's St. Patrick's Day. The green sashes are laid out on the table for his father and two older brothers--all ready for them to sport in the big parade. This is all very exciting, but Jamie's family had told him he was too small to walk in the parade--too young to make it all the way up Acorn Hill. He decides to take matters (and his trusty flute) into his own small hands, and embarks on an early morning walk--all the way up Acorn Hill--with his dog Nell. What did they know? Sure enough, while the village is sleeping, he traverses the parade route to the top of the hill where he greets the sun with a hearty, "A happy St. Pat's to you, sun." And, he makes it home before breakfast! While no one finds out what Jamie has done, you suspect that he may tell his family later. Kids will love the fact that Jamie climbs all the way up the hill when everyone said he couldn't. A simple but satisfying St. Patrick's Day read-aloud, and an IRA/CBC Children's Choice. This is an excellent story and the artwork is wonderful. Young ones find a small slice or a big chunk of Irish tradition, history, and current life, depending on if a reader simply read the book aloud (something I'm asked to do constantly) or teacher used it as the starting point for a kindergarten unit study.
We checked this book out at the library a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. We purchased it and read it all year long. The story is a cute one of a little boy stretching his legs and gaining some independence.
We get our daughter a book about all the holidays that make up her cultural heritage and community. This is a beautiful book about St. Pat's day, but also about overcoming low expectations and self-empowerment -- but it's never preachy. My 3 yo daughter loves this book well after St. Pat's day, and we love to read it to her. Jann Brett has another winner! Although these illustrations lack the colorful details she's known for, the complexity of the mostly black/white drawings keep it engaging.
I love this story by Eve Bunting. It is the perfect read for St. Patrick's day. The illustrations are mosty monogramatic but still cature the children's attention. Highly recommend!

Gifted to grandchildren, they liked the book.
Such a sweet and fun book. There aren't to many St Patricks books so this is great for March bedtime stories. Nice illustrations too.
